Importance of water conservation

Water is extremely vital in the everyday life of everyone for drinking, washing clothes, animals, grains, cleaning, and so many other uses that eliminating water would eliminate our specie. We are all dependant on water which is a vital necessity. “The water footprint refers to the volumes of water consumption and pollution that are ‘behind’ our daily consumption”. Water is critical for ecological systems and the health of humans.

Considering the importance of water, on 22nd of July 2019 Water Conservation Day was celebrated by Allenhouse Colleges, Kanpur. Emphasizing the importance of water conservation in water-scant countries in the world, Prof Monowar Khalid Alam guided the students.

In the opening ceremony of this program, Director, Dr. G. G. Sastry imparted his valuable knowledge regarding water crisis around the globe and also spoke to the students on daily attitudes and practices that contribute to saving water. A poster making competition on Save Water was also conducted for the students on the importance of hygiene, sanitation and conservation of water.

Without water, life is not possible on the earth. We totally rely on water for public health and equitable progress. It is essential for food and energy security, and it underpins the functioning of industries. All students including faculty members took the vow and accepted the challenge to make the people, especially the student community aware about the importance of water conservation. For this purpose a presentation of different methods of water conservation was given with special reference to rainwater harvesting, watershed management & water purification.

The Chief Guest of this ceremony Prof. Monowar Alam, enlightened the audience about the importance of water conservation in the country. He delivered an awareness talk on the issue of shortage of drinking water and its contaminants.  He informed the audience that in India the use of water is 10% for domestic purpose, about 80-85% for agricultural purposes, and about 5% for Industrial purposes. Therefore, his emphasis was on the conservation of water in all aspects. He stressed on the fact that a proper study and research must be conducted before visiting a village, as every village has a different type of water need and that some villages in India have good water level and some don’t. Hence, it is important to know beforehand the type of awareness to be spread in villages to have a fruitful and steady impact.
